Measurement Task

Wednesday 15 February 2017 No comments
We have been learning all about measurement through whole group lessons, math stations and open exploration of our NPDL crate.  We are hoping to take this new understanding of linear measurement and create our own 'mini' versions of the crate.  Each student will be responsible for creating, IN CLASS, a crate of the own choice.  We are asking students to bring in materials from home to use in the creation of their crate.  As a class, we brainstormed possible materials we can use.  They include the following:
  • Popiscle sticks
  • pipecleaners
  • lego
  • straws
  • paper
  • tooth picks and marshmallows
  • cardboard
  • wood and screws ... be careful with this option
  • tin foil
  • paperclips
  • string
  • beads
  • playdough/modelling clay
  • books
  • clothes pins
Our goal is to start building this friday February 17.  As it was expressed to students, this task should not involve having to go out and buy materials.  Be creative with what is around your home.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Deep Learning Update

Sunday 5 February 2017 No comments
Our Deep Learning Journey is well underway.  We had a very special visit from Patrick whose family owns an Ottawa business called "Northern Shopper".  He brought to St Anne a large wooden crate (4x4x4) and assembled it in our learning commons.  Then he spoke to all the Grade 2 students a bit about life in Nunavut and the difficulty of finding fresh produce and other supplies there, as well as the extreme cost of such items when they are available.  As part of our deep learning journey, we will be further exploring first nations peoples, but with a focus on the Inuit.  We hope to connect with a school in Nunavut and share about our communities.  We will also be fundraising to buy supplies to ship up north.  Patrick very kindly donated the crate free of charge to us.  Last week, Jay Williams (chaplain at Holy Trinity) and his 7 year old son, Charlie, came to speak to the grade 2 students about their experiences living in Igloolik, Nunavut for two years.

As mentioned in the Powtoon video, we will be looking for volunteers who have expertise in the areas of photography, financial literacy or native art/culture.  Look for a survey and more information to come in the near future!

In language we have been reading texts about different First Nations peoples, and students are finding important facts.  They continue to develop their skills on asking questions and are now working on finding information to answer questions.

Last week in math we started linear measurement, and we have been thinking of non-standard units to measure length (cubes, straws, shoes, etc) as well as standard units (centimetres and metres).  Ask your child what they have been learning, while working through our new math stations.
